You're right about community -- my farmer friend down the road does the same once a year, although I don't know if the meat was from his own cattle. I'd love to hear more of your stories about Central Asia sometime. There's a lot I could respond to in that, but I just wanted to note the social role that meat has often played -- especially when it comes to the slaughter of large animals. Before refrigeration, it was often the case that slaughter (or a successful hunt) meant a feast or a sharing-out - either of which was hugely important for managing your social relationships -- (who got included, who not, who got what, who reciprocated later and who did not, etc.) But even in 1970s Pennsylvania I have fond childhood memories of a couple of times butchering and rendering (though not slaughtering) pigs on the family farm. The extended family gathered for the fun and labor and the meat dispersed again with the family members. And in 1990s central asia, when a man would show up with a fat sheep, a long knife and a good price there was a scramble in the neighborhood to see if there was enough interest and ready cash around to divvy up a sheep!Andy Brownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03820201752437230985noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5811749743523633503.post-33560323250268499402013-04-21T07:24:07.421+01:002013-04-21T07:24:07.421+01:00your writing is enjoyed here in Australia... your ...your writing is enjoyed here in Australia... your writings about the relationship between you and your daughter are also enjoyed... your writings about all things is enjoyed...
