I have driven on some roads that are like ...Phil,

I have driven on some roads that are like you describe, although they have built-up motorways now between the main cities. Go off the beaten path a bit, though, and you see images that look like something out of Tolkien. It does have a smashing of old and new - the graffiti-covered offices near us rest in sight of houseboats on the 300-year-old canal, and a pub near us has a satellite dish poking out of its thatch roof. You never know what you'll see next here. Obvious similarities with remaining British Isles of those days but I wonder none of the chimneys seem to be smoking. Perhaps very early early in the morning 'rush hour'?

I was in Dublin once for a conference in 97 when the credit boom was only just getting going. I managed to walk round for a few hours and sampled a terrific 'Wholefood' restaurant and a couple of pubs. Fascinated to see the old postboxes with Victoria et al on them; just painted green instead of red. Also to see on its central mound the mediaeval cathedral still Episcopalian and the Catholic Cathedral elsewhere and relatively new.

Over in the west from Burren to Sligo it was a mixture of very old fashioned and raw new. Do they still have main E/W routes on two-way roads with a 3rd middle lane?

best
Phil
PS I managed later a flying visit to Newgrange monument in the Boyne Valley - astonishing pre-history. I was travelling by bus and hitch-hiking and it was all too brief.philsharrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16992266289232459952noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5811749743523633503.post-9307164464425757572017-04-16T11:23:25.599+01:002017-04-16T11:23:25.599+01:00Phil,
I looked at the signs, and I'm pretty ...Phil,

I looked at the signs, and I'm pretty sure they say "Howth," "Fairview," "City Centre," and possibly "Andreas Street." I matched them with streets in Dublin today, and while I can't match it to a specific point, that would put it in North Dublin, just north of the city centre and the Harbour, near Fairview Park and Howth Road. The houses in the background also look like some of the homes that still stand in that area. I wish we still had streetlights like that.

Hope that helps!Brian Kallerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11082602126850605083noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5811749743523633503.post-12188654546791160712017-04-16T11:07:19.200+01:002017-04-16T11:07:19.200+01:00Phil,
I should have included a credit -- it'...Phil,

I should have included a credit -- it's used with permission from Irishhistorylinks.net. It's of people bicycling in Dublin, but I don't know the street - sorry.
