We are surrounded by the Bog of Allen where we live, and the ground is
always variable -- hard as dirt most days, but flammable in a drought,
with columns of smoke rising in the distance like forest fires. In the
rainy season it bounces like a mattress and swells like dough, not
always evenly. Hence, this long-standing pub in our neighbourhood has
long been standing unevenly. Thankfully, it's not so pronounced that the
pints slide down the bar.
Let’s say we've lost most of the self-reliant skills and classical education that our forbears possessed. Let's say we have replaced them with a culture of buying and discarding things we don't value, and staring at glowing screens. Let's say you want to try to rediscover an older way of life, believing we will need such things again.
And let’s say you have a daughter.
