Basil Rathbone's biggest fan

Last Sunday we journeyed to Dublin for a rare treat; a cinema there was playing the 1938 version of The Adventures of Robin Hood, with Errol Flynn and Olivia De Havilland.

She was six when I first showed it to her, and adored the action -- until the climactic battle, when she announced indignantly, "Those people should not be sword-fighting on the stairs like that -- there is no railing! They are being quite dangerous!"

This time, though, she appreciated more of the supporting cast, particularly the great Eugene Pallette as Friar Tuck. She cheerfully told her great-grandfather on the phone that night that “Basil Rathbone is one of my favourite actors.”
