More Good News

We broke ground yesterday for our new home, and demolished the dilapidated trailer in which my parents-in-law had lived for many years.

What kind of house are you going to build?

We can't do anything particularly exotic, due to local ordinance, a small budget and the fact that we are building in a bog. We are building a medium-sized house with a south-facing greenhouse, super-insulation, a heat pump, hot-water solar panels and a wood stove for emergencies. We considered geothermal heating, but it's a bit too expensive for us right now -- but with the heat pump, we have the infrastructure for geothermal if we can ever afford the required excavation.

We built a passive solar super-insulated house in 2003. It does really work well, it takes a lot less energy to heat and cool than other homes. We put in a wood stove and only used it a couple of times when we were building the house. I glad to see others building them too, I wish they would make it standard for all new homes. I added PV a couple of years ago on our garage. We would like to add solar hot water someday - we had put radiant tubing in our slab.

Great pictures! If you don't mind my asking, where are you located, and how is the PV working out? Feel free to respond off-blog if you want privacy. Ireland isn't an ideal place for PV, but if we can afford it someday, we could put up a wind turbine.

Keep in touch.
